Inaugural Oceania Cross Triathlon Championships set for Snowy Mountains

By Oceania Triathlon | 14 Sep, 2014

The iconic Thredbo Valley in the Snowy Mountains is set to play host to the first Oceania Cross Triathlon Championships in February, 2015.

The Oceania Championships and MultiSport Festival is set to be an adrenalin packed weekend of ‘not to be missed’ off-road action as competitors battle it out to be crowned Oceania’s first Cross-Triathlon Champion, when the Oceania Cross Triathlon Championships are held from 28 February to 1 March 2015 in the Snowy Mountains.

The Oceania Cross Triathlon Championships will see the leaders of the Australian TreX Cross Triathlon Series compete against their Oceania counterparts, in what will be one of the most uniquely challenging off-road events held in Australia.  Competitors from countries including Australia, New Zealand, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Palau, Guam, Fiji and the Cook Islands will be invited to tackle the challenging 1500m Swim, 30km XC Mountain Bike and 10km Trail Run to take out the title of 2015 Oceania Champion. Competitors will have the chance to take home a share of the $50,000 Festival Prize Pool in the main event, which will also be one of the qualifying rounds for the ITU World Cross Triathlon Championships in 2015. Sprint Distance, Junior and Dirt Kids Cross Triathlon events will also be staged, alongside trail run and mountain bike events throughout the festival.

Cross Triathlon has been simmering on the fringe of Australian sport for some time now and over the past seven years Australia’s national cross triathlon series TreX has been raising the profile of the sport and witnessing its rapid growth in popularity. Cross Triathlon takes the traditional format and mixes it with a huge helping of grit, dirt and hardcore action as competitors tackle a combination of swimming, mountain biking and trail running legs.
The success of the TreX series, coupled with the strong support of Triathlon Australia and the recent staging of sanctioned Australian Championships, means OFF-ROAD is rapidly becoming the ONLY ROAD for many triathletes. SSecuring the first Oceania Championships in Australia is testament to cross triathlon’s future both in Australia and across the world.

Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa is nestled in the spectacular Thredbo Valley and Kosciuszko National Park, with its abundance of wildlife, providing an iconic backdrop for the Oceania Cross Triathlon Championships. Beautiful Lake Crackenback will host the swim leg. The mountain bike leg will be staged on the diverse combination of action packed mountain bike trails that encompass the resort and national park.  The iconic Snowy Mountains landscape, featuring some of Australia’s most unique and spectacular scenery, will form the backdrop for the trail run.
As the event hub, Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa will offer competitors and spectators exclusive use of the resort with properties from studios to three bedroom apartments covering all budgets and tastes. Resort bookings are filling fast so don’t miss out on the great rates currently on offer.

The Snowy Mountains Region also provides a wide range of accommodation and activities, giving visitors the opportunity to explore this spectacular region of NSW.
The Oceania Cross Triathlon Championships and MultiSport Festival is proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW.
