Anti-doping: Geranamine

By World Triathlon Admin | 27 Aug, 2009

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) is a member of the Association of National Anti-doping Agencies (ANADO). The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) is also a member of this organization. The CCES recently put out this warning about supplements containing Geranamine. ITU thought it was important to forward this information to its athletes. Please see below for a message from the CCES website: CCES Issues Warning Against the Use of Geranamine.

(Ottawa, Ontario August 18, 2009)  The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) would like to warn athletes subject to doping control that they should NOT take supplements containing Geranamine, a prohibited stimulant and fat-burning substance. A concentrate extract of Geranium oil, Geranamine is a pure chemical formula that contains high concentration of 4-methylhexanamine, a banned substance otherwise known as DMAA or dimethylamylamine.
There have been a number of recent international doping violations as a result of supplements containing Geranamine. The most recent violation resulted in a four-year sanction for the athlete. Athletes should be aware that they are at risk of committing a doping violation if they choose to use Geranamine.

Geranamine is prohibited under category S6 - Stimulants on the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List. While this substance is classified as a specified substance, a classification which recognizes the potential for unintentional use of a banned substance, the CCES strongly advises athletes that they should avoid the use of Geranamine as they always bear the ultimate responsibility for the products they ingest.
The CCES is an independent, national, non-profit organization. Our mission, to foster ethical sport for all Canadians, is carried out through research, promotion, education, detection and deterrence, as well as through programs and partnerships with other organizations.
