Home to 150 elite athletes from 42 countries across the globe, Salford Triathlon ITU World Cup 2005 last night earned the enviable title of Event of the Year at Manchester’s glittering Tourism Awards hosted by TV personality, Vernon Kay.

Competing against some of the region’s most high profile and well established events, Salford Triathlon scooped the coveted title boasting some outstanding credentials - having a distribution audience of one billion in 55 countries across the world.

As the event sets out to take the global stage in its bid to host the World Championships in 2010, Salford Triathlon ITU World Cup goes from strength to strength on the international circuit. The event was an economic success attracting nearly £2 million spend in the area and over 15,000 spectators, who were keen to witness amateur triathletes competing on the same course as world class sports stars.

Salford may now be one of the contenders that will go forward to the England North West Tourism Awards , set to take place in October 2006.

Salford demonstrated its tourism pull across the board last night and was shortlisted in numerous categories, from Small Visitor Attraction of the Year (Ordsall Hall), to Website of the Year (www.thequays.org.uk and www.trisalford.info).

Commenting on the accolade, Lindsey Hebden, Tourism Marketing Manager at Salford City Council said: “This is a great achievement - we’re really proud of Salford Triathlon’s reputation not only in the sporting arena but as a spectator event. This award really is the icing on the cake, in recognising the event’s massive tourism appeal, which continues to grow year on year.”
