Matthew Wilson representing Ireland in the U23 World Duathlon Championships in Corner

Matthew Wilson, from Queens University, Belfast will be racing in the U23 Elite category in the World Duathlon Championships in Cornerbrook, Canada this weekend. He is in great shape at the moment after some solid performances at the Irish Duathlon Champs and Crooked Lake.
He has also just returned from Denmark where he was invited out to train with the Danish Elite squad including Rasmus Henning (former European Triathlon Champion) and Torbjorn Sindballe (fastest bike split ever at Ironman Hawai). He also finished 16th in their Elite Triathlon Championships.
He is heading out with hopes of a top 10 finish. He is well fired up after last years World Championships in Australia where they had the senior and u23 races together and only 3/4 of the u23’s that started were pulled out after being lapped on the 6 lap bike course, and unfortunately Matt was one of them, despite being in a group that included the likes of Oliver Mott!

Matthew has had a successful year and has secured some backing and support from Up and Running Belfast, Ulster Sports Trust and Queen’s University. He also has his sights on a strong performance at the European Championships in Rimini, Italy in October and at Milton Keynes in the Duathlon World Cup race at the end of October, so still a lot of season left for him.

In the age group event lloyd Berry (40-44) and Gerard Deegan (35-39) are also representing Ireland.
