World Triathlon Explainer: Triathlon Mixed Relay

World Triathlon Explainer: Triathlon Mixed Relay

The Triathlon Team Mixed Relay format showcases racing at its most thrilling, where the individual sport combines with pure team spirit to produce fireworks on the blue carpet! All four athletes on a team must complete a super-sprint triathlon - 300m swim, approx 6.6km bike and 1km run - before tagging off to a teammate (for the Paris 2024 Olympic cycle, the order is always male-female-male-female). Among the most exciting aspects of the races for spectators is the athletes’ dramatic sprint and dive after being tagged by their teammate, as well as the intensity and speed from start to finish, with tight, back-and-forth lead changes and team pride the hallmarks of the events.

2022 World Triathlon Cup Arzachena - Elite Women’s Highlights

Sandra Dodet of France had enough in the tank to pull clear on the final 2.5km and take the first World Cup gold of 2022 in Arzachena, a hot and hard morning of sprint-distance racing on the island of Sardinia, where Dodet was one of five athletes looking strong over the early stages of the run after a tough three-lap bike had taken the legs out of much of the field, but as the contenders slowly dropped away, it became a sprint between Julie Derron (SUI) and Luisa Baptista (BRA) for the silver. Ultimately, it was the Swiss who was able to repeat her second place of 12 months ago. Watch it on-demand at TriathlonLIVE.tv

The first action of the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification Period saw Great Britain's Jonathan Brownlee repeat the feat at the 2022 World Triathlon Cup Arzachena, leading from the early stages of the bike all the way to the tape. It had been a four-man breakaway on the first of three draining climbs in the 30-degree heat, but only Tom Richard (FRA) could keep the pace up front across the run, eventually finishing third for a first World Cup podium after Brazil’s Manoel Messias had steamrolled his way into second with a lightening 5km. 2022 World Triathlon Championship Finals - Elite Men’s Highlights

The race could hardly have been any tighter and the result certainly could not have been any better for Leo Bergere of France, as a first Series gold of his career sealed a remarkable first world title. Standing third in the Maurice Lacroix World Rankings heading into the Championship Finals, he knew that only a win could put him close to the trophy. Even then, both Alex Yee and Hayden Wilde had the title in reach. In fact, both had a hand on the trophy, with 400m to go Wilde was champion until Matthew Hauser passed him, Yee was champion until Geens pulled clear into third. But it was Bergere onto the front pack out of the water and driving the bike, even after the chasers closed in over the final laps, there was no catching him over the 10km run. USA’s Morgan Pearson was piecing together a phenomenal run of his own, scything through the field to hit second, Geens’ late surge to bronze preventing Yee from taking the title, Hauser’s fifth ahead of Wilde preventing the New Zealander doing the same. Shrugging off the soaring temperatures, Bermuda’s Olympic hero was again able to produce the goods when it mattered most, navigating plenty of drama on the 40km bike and then easing away from the only woman who could stop her date with destiny, Georgia Taylor-Brown. Gold secured Duffy the title, the race and Series silver went to Taylor-Brown, an excellent first podium for Lena Meissner in third. Another eventful fourth place finish for Taylor Knibb after coming off on the bike secured her the Series bronze.
