He had transverse myelitis, a rare and aggresive neurological condition which attacks the spinal cord. During a hospital visit during the London 2012 Paralympic Games and inspired by Australia's Bill Chaffey, a five-time world champion in Para Triathlon, he began to research his options in para sport.
