2022 WTCS Montreal Final - Elite Women’s Highlights

Top-ranked Georgia Taylor-Brown completed her first experience of the blue carpet elimination format with a dazzling gold, coming through the intense heat and racing triumphant. It had been a huge effort in rising temperatures, but it was Taylor-Brown who broke away on the final bike leg with Beth Potter (GBR) and Cassandre Beaugrand (FRA) for company, and it became a chase for the podium positions, WTCS Leeds champion Beaugrand able to pass Potter late on to take silver.

It was a duathlon format for the men’s qualification races following heavy rains in the lead up to the event affecting the water course, but that didn’t dampen the excitement as the battles to progress without the need for a repechage began.

2022 WTCS Montreal - Women’s Qualification Races

The good news that Saturday’s finals would be held over the planned swim-bike-run greeted the start of the WTCS Montreal action on Friday afternoon after the qualifiers had to be switched to duathlons and two qualifier super-sprint races, followed by a repechage for those outside the top tens, all in offering 30 spots on the next day’s start line.

2022 World Triathlon Junior World Championships - Men

After a format change to duathlon due to bad weather affecting the water quality, the intensity was cranked up for the start of the men’s Junior World Championship race in Montreal. The leaders chopped and changed in what looked like being an unpredictable chase for the title, until Thomas Hansmaennel put the hammer down after just a few hundred metres of the final 5km to pull clear. With nobody able to respond, Hansmaennel carved out a huge gap behind him, and was able to soak up the moment down the final stretch of blue carpet, finishing 18 seconds ahead of Toby Powers (AUS) in second, Reese Vannerson (USA) with the bronze.

2022 World Triathlon Junior Championships Montreal - Women

Following up on her world championship silver in Quarteira last year, Sweden’s Tilda Mansson powered to the gold in Montreal pulling away from Jule Behrens over the last run lap to take the tape and the 2022 world title. The format had been changed to duathlon after heavy rains in the preceding days affected the water course, and the previous year’s top two were soon locked in battle across the run-bike-run, eventually leaving the rest of the field trailing, Livia Gross of Switzerland was able to win the challenge for bronze.

WTCS Yokohama got 2022 up and running in the best possible fashion, here are the talking points: 1. U23 World Champion Emma Lombardi finished fourth in her first WTCS race, underlining her one-to-watch status 2. The Aussies and Kiwis were back in force after their pandemic travel restrictions, with Wilde and Hauser leading the men's charge 3.
