Oceania Triathlon

The 2008 Freudenstadt ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships wrapped on Sunday with team relays.  The exciting team races are popular events for the fans and athletes because of the fast and furious pace.  Each team member completes a 2.5-kilometer run, 3-kilometer mountain bike and 3-kilometer cross-country ski before handing off to their teammate.

Germany won the elite women’s team relay with another dominating performance.  Anchored by six-time world champion Sigrid Mutscheller, Team Germany came from behind to win its seventh team title since 2001.  Despite leading for most of the race, Norway couldn’t stop the unstoppable Mutscheller and took the silver.  It was also a double medal weekend for Carina Wasle who anchored Austria to bronze.

There was sweet redemption in the elite men’s team relay as Sigi Bauer, who failed to finish on Saturday due to a flat tire, led Austria to gold in time of 1 hour 22 minutes and 23 secs.  Germany took the silver and four-time world champion Arne Post helped Norway to bronze, edging out the Italian team by five seconds.

Germany was in the lead from the beginning with Stefan Franz and Florian Holzinger increasing the gap leg by leg.  Austria tried to stay in contention for the world championships title and fortunately for them, Bauer was hungry for gold after the disappointment of Saturday’s race.  After the 2.5 km run, Bauer stole the lead from Germany and never looked back.  He was the first out of T2 and owned a commanding lead with Germany in second and Italy in third. 

As the final athletes for each team began, the Norwegian team was in the 6-7 positions with Team USA nearly three minutes behind the leader.  Norway seemed out of medal contention until the amazing Arne Post headed out onto the course.  After the run, he was about one minute and ten seconds behind the Italian anchor Daniel Antonioli who was in third.  But Post caught him in the last part of the ski course and claimed bronze for Norway.

In the junior men’s relay, Austria won with a dominating start to finish performance.  Italy took the silver while Germany thrilled the home crowds with another medal, this time a bronze in the junior men’s relay.

Los Campeonatos del Mundo de Triatlón de Invierno ITU finalizaron el domingo con los relevos por equipos. Las apasionantes carreras por equipos son pruebas populares para los aficionados y atletas gracias al ritmo rápido y frenético de las carreras. Cada miembro del equipo tiene que completar 2.5-kilómetros de carrera a pie, 3-kilómetros en bicicleta de montaña y 3 kilómetros de esquí campo a través antes de dar el relevo a su compañero de equipo.

Alemania ganó la prueba de relevos de la élite femenina con otra actuación aplastante. Lideradas por la seis veces campeona del mundo Sigrid Mutscheller, el Equipo Alemán se hizo con su sexto título desde el 2001. A pesar de liderar la mayor parte de la carrera, no pudo con la imparable Mutscheller y se hizo con la plata. Fue también la segunda medalla del fin de semana para Carina Wasle quien llevó a Austria al bronce.

Sigi Bauer se redimió del pinchazo que sufrió el sábado que le hizo no terminar la carrera, liderando al equipo austriaco en la medalla de oro con un tiempo de 1 hora 22 minutos y 23 segundos. Alemania se hizo con la plata y el cuatro veces campeón del mundo Arne Post ayudó a Noruega a conseguir el bronce, superando por cinco segundos al equipo italiano. 

Alemania estuvo en cabeza desde el principio con Stefan Franz y Florian Holzinger incrementando la ventaja segmento tras segmento. Austria intentó permanecer en la disputa del título por el campeonato mundial y afortunadamente para ellos, Bauer estaba ansiado por la medalla de oro tras la decepción de la carrera del sábado. Después los 2.5 km de carrera, Bauer recuperó la ventaja de los alemanes y nunca miró atrás. Fue el primero a la salida de la segunda transición y se mantuvo en cabeza hasta el final, con Alemania en segundo lugar e Italia en tercera posición.

En los relevos junior masculinos, Austria ganó dominando la carrera de principio a fin. Italia se llevó la plata mientras que Alemania emocionó al público local con otra medalla, esta vez un bronce en los relevos junior masculinos.
