Oceania Triathlon

The 12th ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships in Freudenstadt, Germany were a resounding success even in spite of the warm winter weather that forced event organizers to bring in 900 cubic meters of artificial snow for the cross-country ski course.

Elite Women - February 23, 2008
7.5-km run, 12-km mountain bike, 10-km cross-country ski
The irrepressible Sigrid Mutscheller of Germany won the ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships for a record sixth time.  She delighted the home crowds by leading a gold-silver sweep for the home team.  Mutscheller won with a time of 1 hour, 51 minutes and 4 seconds, almost a full 90 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.  Her team mate Anke Kullman won her first World Championship medal, taking the silver while Austrian Carina Wasle, last years runner-up, came across for the bronze.

After trailing for much of the race, Mutscheller and Wasle rode into T2 side-by-side.  But from the beginning of the tough 10-kilometer cross-country ski course, Mutscheller took command and stole the lead from Wasle for the first time in the race.  After the first lap the defending champion opened up a 30-second gap, then parlayed that into a 90-second lead.  From there, Mutscheller never looked back and the final result was inevitable, the same result the sport had seen at five previous World Championships.  Wasle wasnt able to hold off Kullman, another charging German who surged past for the silver while Wasle settled for the bronze.

Im really happy.  It was such a challenge for me to win this in my hometown.  I was very, very nervous before the race.  During the race it was so hard for me on the bike to overtake Carina (Wasle) but Im so happy I did, said Mutscheller.  There were no tactics, I just gave all I had.  I had a very good ski leg and throughout the race I gave it my best.

Mutscheller entered the history books as the only athlete in ITU history to win six elite World Championships.  She was previously tied with Great Britains Simon Lessing and the late Benny Vansteelant who each owned five elite World Championships.  Mutscheller has dominated Winter Triathlon since the sports beginning in 1997, having medalled in ten of the 12 World Championships.  Shes also been on the podium for every European Championship since 1998, winning seven times in all.

Under23 Women - February 23, 2008
7.5-km run, 12-km mountain bike, 10-km cross-country ski
The Under23 womens race was also contested at the same time as the elite women and it was an absolutely dominating performance by Norwegian Marthe Myhre.  She decimated the field by more than 13 minutes.  Italy took silver while Estonia came through for the bronze.

Junior Women - February 23, 2008
5-km run, 6-km mountain bike, 5-km cross-country ski
Norwegian teenager Anita Dalen dominated the junior womens race, winning by more than seven minutes over Estonian Kairi Schmidt.  Monika Kadlecova won Slovakias only medal of the championship with a bronze in the junior womens race.

Elite Men - February 23, 2008
7.5-km run, 12-km mountain bike, 10-km cross-country ski
Norwegian Arne Post won the ITU Winter Triathlon World Championship for the second time in his career, successfully defending his title.  Frenchman Nicolas Lebrun, last years bronze medalist, won the silver this time around and current European Champion Andreas Svanebo of Sweden took the bronze.

After the crowd was still buzzing over German Sigrid Mutschellers historic win in the womens race, Florian Holzinger had the crowds cheering as he led the men into the first transition after the 7.5-kilometer run.  On the gruelling 12-kilometer mountain bike course, Holzinger was alone in front and owned a 50-second lead but was being hunted down by the strong chase pack. 

The race turned in T2 as Holzinger left transition only to have his lead shrink to less than 15 seconds.  Post surged past the Holzinger and after the second lap built a 70-second lead. The defending champion tore up the ski course and cruised to the finish line for his fourth World Championship.  Lebrun hung on for silver while Svanebo came back hard in the final last two laps to take the bronze.  Two-time World Champion Sigi Bauer of Austria suffered a flat tire in the first lap of the bike leg and was forced to pull out.

It was a very good race for me.  I had a good run and I had a good group on the bike so I did not have to use that much energy.  Nobody followed me on the cross-country skiing, thats where Im at my best so its good for me when its a tough ski course and in tough conditions so I had a very good day, said Post.

Under23 Men - February 23, 2008

In the Under23 mens race, Peter Viana won gold in a commanding performance.  It was the step up he was looking for after his silver from last year.  Gjermund Nordskar made it a gold-silver outing for Norway while Peter Mosny got Slovakia on the podium with the bronze.

Junior Men - February 23, 2008

In a tightly contested and exciting junior mens race, Frenchman Rudy Molard took the gold over Czech Vit Zahula but just eight seconds.  Molard was fourth after the run and with the second-fastest ski split of the day, he became the first winter triathlete from France to win the junior mens world title.  Felix Waldhuber used the fastest ski in the field to take the bronze.

Elite Womens Team Relay - February 24, 2008
2.5-km run, 3-km mountain bike, 3-km cross-country ski
The ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships wrapped on Sunday with team relays.  The exciting team races are popular events for the fans and athletes because of the fast and furious pace. 

Germany won the elite womens team relay with another dominating performance.  Anchored by six-time world champion Sigrid Mutscheller, Team Germany came from behind to win its seventh team title since 2001.  Despite leading for most of the race, Norway couldnt stop the unstoppable Mutscheller and took the silver.  It was also a double medal weekend for Carina Wasle who anchored Austria to bronze.

Elite Mens Team Relay - February 24, 2008
2.5-km run, 3-km mountain bike, 3-km cross-country ski
There was sweet redemption in the elite mens team relay as Sigi Bauer, who failed to finish on Saturday due to a flat tire, led Austria to gold in time of 1 hour 22 minutes and 23 seconds.  Germany took the silver and four-time world champion Arne Post helped Norway to bronze, edging out the Italian team by five seconds.

Germany was in the lead from the beginning with Stefan Franz and Florian Holzinger increasing the gap leg by leg.  After the 2.5-kilometer run, Bauer stole the lead from Germany and never looked back.  He was the first out of T2 and owned a commanding lead with Germany in second and Italy in third. 

As the final athletes for each team began, the Norwegian team was nearly three minutes behind the leader.  Norway seemed out of medal contention until Post headed out onto the course.  After the run, he was about one minute and ten seconds behind the Italian anchor Daniel Antonioli.  But Post caught him near the end of the ski course to claim bronze for Norway.

Junior Mens Team Relay - February 24, 2008

In the junior mens relay, Austria won with a dominating start to finish performance.  Italy took the bronze while Germany thrilled the home crowds with another medal, this time a bronze in the junior mens relay.

Final thoughts on the ITU Winter Triathlon World Championships
Arne Post is a deadly serious athlete who has made new progress in cross country skiing this year. Now he is almost qualified for the Norwegian team in this discipline and that tells a lot about him. Besides he is a modest guy who always takes time to help his teammates, said Kare J Grotta, Team Leader for Norway

Im very happy with the race because I wasnt sure it would fit with so little snow.  But we had tremendous races.  It was a fair competition and with this weather I have to be happy.  We had about 250 volunteers, working day and night to put the snow here in the area because it was mostly artificial snow.  They have been working for ten days to put in this 2.5-kilometer race track, said Uli Mutscheller, LOC event organizer.  Im very proud of (my wife) Sigrid because she had a lot of pressure because she knew about all the stress with the snow and my sleepless night so I think she did a good job to concentrate on the race and Im very proud she could win her sixth world championship here at home.

Los 12 Campeonatos del Mundo de Triatln de Invierno en Freudenstadt, Alemania fueron un rotundo xito incluso a pesar de las clidas temperaturas invernales que obligaron a los organizadores de la prueba a traer 900 metros cbicos de nieve artificial para el recorrido de esqu campo a travs.

La imparable atleta alemana Sigrid Mutscheller ha ganado los Campeonatos del Mundo de Triatln de Invierno por sexta vez. Deleit a la aficin local liderando el barrido oro-plata del equipo anfitrin. Mutscheller gan con un tiempo de 1 hora, 51 minutos y 4 segundos, casi con 90 segundos de ventaja sobre su inmediata perseguidora. Su compaera de equipo Anke Kullman gan su primera medalla en los Campeonatos del Mundo consiguiendo la plata mientras que la austriaca Carina Wasle subcampen el ao pasado se hizo con el bronce. 

Pero desde el inicio del ltimo segmento, Mutscheller tom el mando y le quit el liderato a Wasle por primera vez en la carrera. Tras la primera vuelta el defensor del campeonato abri un hueco de 30 segundos, que luego aumentara a 90 segundos. Desde aqu, Mutscheller nunca mirara atrs y el resultado final era inevitable, el mismo resultado que el triatln de invierno haba visto en los cinco ltimos Campeonatos del Mundo. La lucha era ahora por la plata y el bronce. Wasle no fue capaz de seguir a Kullman, otra alemana que consigui la plata mientras que Wasle se conform con el bronce.

Estoy realmente feliz. Era un desafo para m ganarlo en mi ciudad natal. Estaba muy, muy nerviosa antes de la carrera. Durante la carrera ha sido muy difcil para m en el segmento de la bicicleta alcanzar a Carina (Wasle) pero estoy tan feliz de lo que he hecho, dijo Mutscheller. No haba ninguna tctica, simplemente di todo lo que tena. Tuve un muy buen segmento de esqu y en todas partes de la carrera di de m lo mejor. 

Mutscheller entra en la historia de los libros como la nica atleta en la historia de la ITU en ganar seis Campeonatos del Mundo lite. Anteriormente estaba empatada con en britnico Simon Lessing y el difunto Benny Vansteelant, los cuales poseen cinco Campeonatos del Mundo. Mutscheller ha dominado el Triatln de Invierno desde el inicio del deporte en 1997, obteniendo medalla en diez de los doce Campeonatos del Mundo. La carrera femenina Sub23 se dio al mismo que la carrera de la lite femenina y ha estado dominada totalmente por la noruega Marthe Myhre. Ella venci con una ventaja de ms de 13 minutos. Italia se llev la plata mientras que Estonia se hizo con el bronce.

Elite Masculina 23 Febrero del 2008

El noruego Arne Post ha ganado el Campeonato del Mundo de Triatln de Invierno ITU por cuarta vez en su carrera, exitosamente en su defensa del ttulo. El francs Incola Lebrun, el ao pasado medallista de bronce, ha ganado esta vez la medalla de plata y el actual Campen Europeo Andreas Svanebo de Suecia ha conseguido el bronce.

El pblico todava estaba emocionado gracias a la histrica victoria de Sigrid Mutscheller en la carrera femenina, cuando Florian Holzinger hizo que la aficin le aclamase al liderar la primera transicin tras los 7.5 kilmetros de carrera a pie. El grupo perseguidor en el que estaba Post, Lebrun y el austriaco Heinz Planitzer. Svanebo estaba por detrs en un tercer grupo a 1 minuto y 20 segundos.

La carrera cambi en la segunda transicin ya que cuando sali de ella su ventaja se redujo a menos de 15 segundos. Post pas a Holzinger y tras la segunda vuelta la ventaja era de 70 segundos. El defensor del campeonato rompi la carrera en el recorrido de esqu campo a travs y cruz la lnea de meta para conseguir su cuarto Campeonato del Mundo. Lebrun se colg la medalla de plata mientras que Svanebo que trabajo duro las ltimas dos vueltas obtuvo el bronce. El dos veces Campen del Mundo Sigi Bauer de Austria sufri un pinchazo en la primera vuelta del segmento de la bicicleta y se vio forzado a abandonar.

Fue una carrera muy buena para m. Tuve una buena carrera a pie y tuve un buen grupo en la bicicleta por lo que no tuve que gastar mucha energa. Nadie me sigui en esqu campo a travs, este es mi punto fuerte y por lo que es bueno que sea un recorrido exigente y en duras condiciones, por lo que tuve un muy buen da hoy, dijo Post.

Relevos por Equipos Elite Femenina 24 Febrero 2008

Los Campeonatos del Mundo de Triatln de Invierno ITU finalizaron el domingo con los relevos por equipos. Las apasionantes carreras por equipos son pruebas populares para los aficionados y atletas gracias al ritmo rpido y frentico de las carreras.

Alemania gan la prueba de relevos de la lite femenina con otra actuacin aplastante. Lideradas por la seis veces campeona del mundo Sigrid Mutscheller, el Equipo Alemn se hizo con su sexto ttulo desde el 2001. A pesar de liderar la mayor parte de la carrera, no pudo con la imparable Mutscheller y se hizo con la plata. Fue tambin la segunda medalla del fin de semana para Carina Wasle quien llev a Austria al bronce.

Relevos por Equipos Elite Masculina 24 Febrero del 2008

Sigi Bauer se redimi del pinchazo que sufri el sbado que le hizo no terminar la carrera, liderando al equipo austriaco en la medalla de oro con un tiempo de 1 hora 22 minutos y 23 segundos. Alemania se hizo con la plata y el cuatro veces campen del mundo Arne Post ayud a Noruega a conseguir el bronce, superando por cinco segundos al equipo italiano. 

Alemania estuvo en cabeza desde el principio con Stefan Franz y Florian Holzinger incrementando la ventaja segmento tras segmento. Austria intent permanecer en la disputa del ttulo por el campeonato mundial y afortunadamente para ellos, Bauer estaba ansiado por la medalla de oro tras la decepcin de la carrera del sbado. Despus los 2.5 km de carrera, Bauer recuper la ventaja de los alemanes y nunca mir atrs. Fue el primero a la salida de la segunda transicin y se mantuvo en cabeza hasta el final, con Alemania en segundo lugar e Italia en tercera posicin. 
Cuando los ltimos atletas de cada equipo comenzaron, el equipo noruego estaba a casi tres minutos de diferencia del lder. Noruega pareca fuera de la lucha por las medallas hasta que llego el turno de Post. Tras la carrera a pie, estaba a 1 minuto y 10 segundos del italiano Daniel Antonioli. Pero post le cogi en la parte final del recorrido de esqu para conseguir la medalla de bronce para Noruega.

Reflexiones Finales sobre los Campeonatos del Mundo de Triatln de Invierno ITU
Arne Post en un atleta humano que ha hecho grandes progresos en el esqu campo a travs este ao. Ahora est prcticamente clasificado para el equipo noruego en esta disciplina y eso dice mucho acerca de l. Adems es un chico modesto que siempre tiene tiempo para ayudar a sus compaeros de equipo, dijo Kare J Grotta, lder del Equipo de Noruega.

Estoy muy feliz con la carrera porque no estaba seguro de que se disputase con tan poca nieve. Pero tuvimos unas carreras estupendas. Fue una carrera aceptable y con esta temperatura tengo que estar feliz. Tuvimos cerca de 250 voluntarios, trabajando da y noche para poner la nieve en la zona porque la mayor parte de la nieve era artificial. Ellos han estado trabajando durante 10 das para poner la nieve en los 2.5 kilmetros de la pista de la carrera, dijo Uli Mutscheller, LOC organizador de la Prueba. Estoy muy orgulloso de (mi esposa) Sigrid ya que tuvo mucha presin porque saba de toda la problemtica con la nieve y de mi noche en vela por lo que creo que hizo un buen trabajo de concentracin en la carrera y estoy muy orgulloso de ella pudiese ganar su sexto campeonato del mundo aqu en casa.
